A Blog About Nike:

Nike has been known worldwide as the “marketing machine”. Nike has become this marketing machine by having popular, world known commercials and ads that make them so well known, and by endorsing all star and professional celebrities that give the company such a high reputation as an athletic company. One celebrity, Michael Jordan they put a lot of effort and money into getting him to become a part of the company. They took such a huge risk on this pre-NBA star because they knew that he was going to be successful in the sport and because they wanted to take him from their competing company, Adidas. The Michael Jordan brand “Air Jordan” is now a massive part of the company and gives them an even wider amount of customers and gets them even more profit. Although other sports companies have made their way into the industry, Nike still finds a way to stay on top. Under Armour, for example is making its way and is becoming very popular. It is taking some profits away from Nike, but they are still far ahead and don’t mind a little competition. Nike makes around 900 products, and all of them are ridiculously successful. Most of the sales have come from their sneakers, with all the different styles, colors, brands and ideas. Nike’s advertisement has become very successful but also very controversial throughout the nation, and it has become this way by making it seem that Nike products are made for athletes and athletes only, and Nike is trying to make it so that they can change that up so people do not believe that anymore. Their slogan “Just Do It” has made an extraordinary impact on not only our society, but societies all over the world. It has been an inspiring quote to some, that has reached inside them and brought forth emotion. For others, it was a negative response to the company saying that it wasn’t successful or impressive. Some commercials made a huge debate throughout the nation about which was right or wrong. The Charles Barkley ad made a large debate by his saying that he wasn’t a role model and he shouldn’t be. He thinks the parents should be because none of these kids are going to be professional athletes and play in the NBA. I agree with his message that he was trying to portray, but at the same time, I could see how that message could upset adults and crush dreams of kids.

The Tiger Woods commercial was famous and showed the creative, fun style that Tiger has. The idea for this came from him playing around during a break on the commercial, and the producer saw it on the way to the bathroom and told him to do it on camera, and Tiger agreed and thought it would be fun and interesting. Many of these athletes have been not replaced but made more modern to make more pleasing to the younger target markets. The new “more modern” Michael Jordan has become P-rod, the skater to branch out to these newer markets. Nike has adapted to the new changes in technology and the fact that less people have been watching television, by sending out e-mail ads, apps on the iPhone and other smartphones, large billboards,YouTube ads and commercials, and many other modern new ways to get information out to new and already existing customers.

Along with having a good marketing team, Nike also has a very strong public relations team. When they had the whole disaster with the “sweatshops”, they made a large apology to the workers and have tried to explain that they are trying to stop the yelling but they cannot increase the pay no matter how much they would like to. If I were in their position, I would have done the exact same thing they did, in a polite fashion to try and make the workers understand. The workers in the Nike factory in Vietnam have had great things to say about the factory. They say that if there is a problem, they feel comfortable talking to them about the problem and know that they will try their best to fix whatever they can. This is much different than the relationship in the sweatshops, where they are obviously paid very little, and get yelled at, embarrassed, harrassed, and treated poorly. The improvements that they need to make are to do their best to increase their pay, find a way to make working conditions and hours better for the workers, and make the workers trust into the factory more than they are. I think that Nike does have a responsibility to pay higher wages to the workers because they are the people making the shoes and products that are earning the company all the money. Without these workers, there would be no product, and therefore there would be no customers, no profit, no success, or no money.

All in all, after watching this video, I see Nike in a much more positive light. I never understood how hard this company has tried to branch out and reach to every target market possible, and how they started out with so little, and somehow turned into this worldwide successful company that will never be forgotten. The one thing that surprised me most about this video was how the entire skateboarding community completely shut out Nike because they would close down all the small skateboarding stores, and how the skateboarders wanted nothing to do with the brand Nike. And even through all of that, Nike still found a way to compromise with the skateboarding target market and reach out to them, to eventually get their trust and sales. All of these things make Nike a remarkable company.

Super Bowl Spectacular

Everyone in America knows that one of the best parts of the SuperBowl are the new commercials released, that can make you laugh almost instantly. The best three commericals in my opinion were:

  1. the M&M commercial because it was funnny and caught my attention
  2. the Oikos greek yogurt with John Stamos because it was funny and John Stamos is just attractive and good looking and easy to stare at and definitely caught my attention.
  3. the Bud Lite commericial with the Dog named “Wego” fetching the beers, was funny and had a cute idea to it, and I just liked the dog a lot too.

Although there were a lot of commercials that appealed to me and that I enjoyed there were some commercials that I didn’t enjoy as much. The three I didn’t like were

  1. Bud Light Platinum commercial near the beginning because it was boring and all that happened was a background voice talking and showing the bottle
  2. Bud Light fake halftime commerical with LMFAO, was a little dumb in my opinion and didn’t enjoy it that much.
  3. Budweiser commercial because even though it was clever and had a kind of good point to it, it was still on the boring side a little

To change these commercials to improve them and get people’s attention more, these companies should have added some humor or something to spice it up and make it more appealing and something that the SuperBowl watchers will remember. A lot of these commercials had much different target markets and one of these commercials that had this was Doritos. Usually the Dorito company advertises to men, but for one of the commercials it was almost directed towards women. The commercial with the dog and the cat being missing was more of womens humor, believing that the husband is stupid and will believe anything and it for like 30+ aged women caucasian, low income because Dorito’s are cheap and also towards men too because men would do anything for food. Another commercial with a new target market is Audi, because it was also surprisingly directed towards women. The Twilight Saga theme to the commercial was very humorous, but also mainly directed towards women because men don’t really enjoy twilight and don’t really get it. It is again for 30-40 year old women that have seen twilight and want a nice classy car with the bright helpful lights. Lastly, another commercial with a surprisingly different target market was H&M. Usually, the commercials from them are for girls clothing and directed towards girls. This one was much different however. They made a smart choice and used David Beckham as their actor in it and used his sex appeal to attract the women to buy these underwear for their husbands. It has already gotten a lot of approval from the women of the U.S, as you could assume.

The commercials with 3 different target markets comparing with eachother are very different. The godaddy.com commercials are obviously directed towards males from ages 20-30 with a low income because it is cheap with not a lot of education. Someone who has not a big busy job, and definitely single males, that value attractive women and being cool and wild. Have a laid back and cool lifestyle. And believe that only the look of things matter not the quality of the product, and believe attractive women are very important.

The second commerical is the Galaxy Note. This commercial was a complete SLAM on the iPhone and showing that this phone is better than the iPhone and that its the next big thing. This commercial was directed towards everyone! from 20+ of all genders and ethnicities, of all jobs marital statuses and educations. Everyone was promoted to with this commercial because everyone was in there.

The last commerical, was the Oikos commercial with the woman and John Stamos. This commercial was obviously directed towards single females, trying to stay slim but with food that tastes good. And the sex appeal of John Stamos makes the commercial use his sex appeal to attract the women in. Single 30 year old women caucasian with a small job and a small income, believing they want to stay slim and look good. Laid back but believe in working hard and  keeping a good appearance and knowing that you get what you want.

For twitter and Facebook, there were a lot of surprises for me. The biggest one was that I only saw the Facebook logo about 4 of 5 times, and the twitter only 2 or 3. This was a BIG SHOCKER to me, because I thought that those two logos would be all over the commercials.

The Pepsi commercials and the Budweiser commercials all contained more than one race. The commercial with “wego” had about every race in it and made it so their beer was advertised to everyone from every race. The Pepsi commerical also contained every race and made it so all people would want to buy their product.

A lot of the car commercials only contained caucasian people, and that was really the only company that stereotyped that way, and eTRade because there were only caucasian people in the commercial with the classic baby.

Overall, the SuperBowl this year may have been a disappointment, but the Commercials were top notch.!

Day Without a Phone: 24 Hours of Torture.

When Scheff first said that we were not going to be allowed to use our phones for a whole day, I automatically thought it was a joke and that she was kidding. Once it finally set in that it was serious, however, the first thoughts going through my head were “Is that even possible?”. Especially for me, this is a large challenge. You’re looking at the girl with at least 27,000 sent or recieved texts a month, and usually more. I’m constantly on my phone and feel wierd without having it. I thought I could do it, built up a strong confidence believing in myself, but that did not last long. At 11 the night before the start of the assignment, I turned my phone off and went to sleep. Usually, my alarm on my iPhone wakes me up at around 5:30- 5:45 so I have enough time to get ready before school. Well this morning, I was woken up by my dad at 6:35 freaking out about how we were going to be late. I got out of bed almost impossibly fast and looked not so great leaving the door for school. Freaking out completely, I knew right from the moment I woke up, that this wasn’t going to be possible. I lasted about an hour and a half without my phone before I started playing with it and texting subconciously without even realizing it. Then from there, I wasn’t turning it back off or putting it down. I couldn’t do it. A cell phone is definitely a necessity to me, due to the alarm to wake me up, a communication of people in the case of an emergency and to even just contact someone about meeting them before school. Living without a cellphone and especially a smartphone is almost impossible, with all of the helpful apps and tools I can use throughout the day to make tasks easier. And even just the fact of just knowing it is in your pocket during the assignment and knowing that you can’t use it, is almost like seeing all of your presents wrapped on christmas and your parents not letting you open them. You get anxious and impatient and just want to use them, and that’s how this assignment was for me. Completely challenging and I commend anyone that could have done that for the entire day because it is extremely impressive.

Will College Dropouts Save America?

College is obviously a very important aspect of becoming a strong leader and successful after the fact when getting jobs. Although a lot of college dropouts are more successful when it comes to being part of a business. Many of America’s greatest inventors and successful business people such as Bill Gates, Marc Zuckerburg, and others were college dropouts and proceeded to earn billions. School is definitely important to learn all the basic fundamentals of subjects, but in some cases it is not necessary and not helpful for learning the tasks needed to make it in the occupational fields. like it said in the article, schools try to make sure no failure comes your way, because they drill the idea into students heads that failure is not acceptable and that failure will not help you with jobs or college applications or anything of that nature. Where in reality, failure happens everyday whether we like it or not, but when failure happens in the job fields, it is a lessons and teaches the workers what to do and not to do to help them become more successful throughout their occupation. If these successful dropouts continue to enter our economy and jobs, and begin to open their own businesses, it will help our economy to skyrocket and become more successful again, and also will give america the benefit of more jobs to proceed to drop the unemployment rate immensely. So in this case, yes, the college dropouts may save America.

Question

catherinedecloux asked: I agree with most of what you said. What I don't agree with is how is it possible to know what a celebrity will do in the future? I don't believe you can ever know what a celebrity will do so you can't exactly pick a celebrity that you know won't hurt your company.

I just made the same point in talking to Lauren. You can never really know what will happen with your celebrity spokesperson in the future, and you cannot garuntee that something bad won’t happen. For all we know, if Taylor Swift was my spokesperson, she may get arrested for drunk driving, Brad Pitt and Angelina may get divorced. Marketers aren’t psychics, none of us can predict or tell exactly what is going to happen with every celebrity in the future. You just have to pick the best possible candidate for your company that will fit your target market, and someone that you can trust and have complete faith in, and will do their best not to destroy the reputation of themselves and of your company.

Question

marketingsavvy1 asked: You ahvea lot of good points in your post. However, no matter what celebrity you choose theres always going to be some from of negative media attention surrounding them. Don't you think your company might lose money constantly making new conmmercials and advertisments with new celebrities?

I totally agree with what you’re saying and I see your point. Every celebrity will have some sort of negative media attention in their career, and that is unevitable. If I were running a company and had to choose a celebrity spokesperson, I would make sure that I decided to choose a celebrity that isn’t constantly watched and judged by the public eye for their wrongs. Someone like Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, etc. Celebrities that aren’t known consistantly for their bad actions or being drawn to the paparazzi, television, newspapers, and magazines negatively. That is the best you can really do, because you cannot really garuntee that each celebrity will not ever end up in a giant scandal like Charlie Sheen, Tiger Woods, Ashton Kutcher, and etc.
